Trump makes a rare admission about the GOP’s poor midterm performance
The twice-impeached former president, who launched an attack on the US Capitol to overturn the 2020 election, admitted Tuesday night that the party that has been charmed by its false narrative of election fraud and endless complaints has not fared so well in midterm elections. Almost every candidate he supported at the state level in battleground states that he lost and then contested was defeated. His Senate runs in the battleground states of Arizona, Nevada and Pennsylvania also failed. “There’s a lot of criticism that the Republican Party should have done better, and frankly, a lot of that blame is correct,” he said. “But the citizens of our country have yet to realize the full extent and severity of the pain our nation is going through, and the total effect of the suffering is just beginning to set in.” Alex Woodward November 16, 2022 5:45 p.m 1668617159
Far-right activists arrested in sweeping election conspiracy theory case want to ‘stop certification’ of Arizona results
Kathryn Engelbrecht and Greg Phillips are the founders of True the Vote and the executive producers of a film being promoted by Donald Trump and other prominent Republicans to promote a fraudulent narrative that he was robbed of the 2020 presidential election. Last month, a federal judge ordered their arrest amid a strange, sprawling case in the wake of that election, with an election software company suing True the Vote for defamation. On the War Room podcast this week, Steve Bannon asked Mr. Phillips and Mr. Engelbrecht to comment on the Arizona governor’s race. Cary Lake, who also made unsubstantiated claims about the 2020 election, lost to Democratic candidate Katie Hobbs, based on projections by the Associated Press and major news networks. Mr Phillips called it a “stolen election”. Ms Engelbrecht said “we have to stop certifying” the results. Alex Woodward November 16, 2022 4:45 p.m 1668614549
Steve Bannon Claims Kari Lake Will Fight Election Result ‘To The Bitter End’
Far-right activist and former Trump aide Steve Bannon reportedly had a “clear eye for unfavorable numbers” before Kari Lake’s election loss. But he told his War Room listeners this week that Ms Lake’s campaign – backed by Trump allies and far-right activist groups – was working “behind the scenes” to discredit Katie Hobbs’ story. “Don’t think that Lake Curry isn’t going to fight to the bitter end,” he said. He has repeatedly suggested the state certify the results, repeating his baseless narrative that the 2020 election was stolen by Trump — claims that have been popular fundraising devices to propel ultimately unsuccessful reactionary campaigns over the past two years. But off the airwaves, Ms. Lake’s campaign was advised to take a more measured approach to the outcome and not “storm the castle,” according to the Washington Post. ICYMI: Katie Hobbs has a message for election naysayers
Arizona Gov.-elect Katie Hobbs said Republican and Democratic lawmakers will have an “open door” in her office to work on bipartisan solutions. But after defeating prominent election denier Kari Lake, who reinforced Trump’s false narrative of election fraud and manipulation, he had a message: “For those of you who prefer to obstruct, spread misinformation and continue to pursue an extreme agenda out of touch with this state, consider the results of this election,” she told supporters at a victory rally Tuesday. “The voters sent us a loud and clear message,” he said. “They rejected chaos, because we have urgent problems. Our need and expectation to deliver.” Alex Woodward16 November 2022 15:45 1668611703
Election denialists fail overwhelmingly in 2022. Defeating candidates warn threat not over
Republican candidates who rejected the outcome of the 2020 presidential election lost every battleground nationally for offices that control how elections are conducted, a major blow to Donald Trump’s campaign to install loyalists in critical state positions that could to do in 2024 what he failed to do in 2020. Voters overwhelmingly rejected candidates who reinforced the former president’s false narrative that his election was stolen or tainted by Democratic fraud or malfeasance and promised undemocratic agendas that would subvert the electoral process to ensure GOP victories. After being beaten, newly elected officials are warning that the GOP movement of Trump loyalists and conspiracy theorists is far from over. The Independent’s Alex Woodward has the full story:
